Jorhat: A branch of a peepal tree near Ambedkar Park behind the Jorhat Court at Baruah Chariali fell on the evening of May 3 and the incident resulted in one woman getting killed and two others being left severely injured.

The deceased woman has been identified as Pinky Robidas, a 35-year-old who is married to Debeswar Robidas of Horuchorai tea estate under Pulibor police station in the district.

The two injured have been identified as Babu Payeng, an 18-year-old who hails from Majuli and Mihir Hazam, who belongs to the Numaligarh tea estate.

An eyewitness has said that the branch, which was rotten, suddenly detached from the tree and ended up falling on top of the trio.

The unfortunate incident occurred when Pinky, who was accompanied by her husband, reportedly crossed the road to board an auto-rickshaw but tragedy struck when the branch fell on top of her. She reportedly succumbed to her injuries and died on the spot.

The two injured had been immediately rushed to the hospital where they are availed of medical treatment.

There was no storm at the time of the incident.

 The police and Forest department personnel had cut and cleared the huge branch which was blocking the road.

Meanwhile, several college students sustained injuries after violence erupted on the night of April 29 amidst the ongoing campaigning for the Students' Union Election in JB College on Jorhat.

As per reports, the supporters of a student union had been accused of attacking the college students over the 2022 Students' Union Election at JB (Jagannath Barooah) college in Jorhat.

The independent candidates had alleged that some members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) entered the JB College Hostel campus at around 03:00 am to put up posters but instead, they started assaulting the students.
